Best Yoga Poses for Hormone Balance

Perform these 5 yoga poses to help with healing from a range of illness and disease

It is understood that optimal hormone health equates to optimal overall health.

Our hormones are the gatekeepers to homeostasis, total balance in the body. When the body is in balance, it heals and thrives. Just like how your houseplant needs the perfect amount of light and water to prevent browning.

I have become so fascinated with hormone imbalance and the endocrine system. With hormone imbalance on the rise contributing to several chronic diseases including PCOS, endometriosis, certain cancers, type 2 diabetes, and depression, now more than ever it is imperative to promote hormone balance.

Our endocrine system is a system of glands that literally allow your organs to function. Everything is run efficiently and effectively by our master conductor, the pituitary gland. These glands are not sexy and shiny like the beautiful liver or glowing heart; they are clusters or lumps of very important cells that specialize in controlling our mind and body.

These glands are distributed throughout our body and they determine how all of our metabolic processes run including how we feel, how we react, how we digest, how we breathe, how we think, and how we move. It is a particularly fascinating and miraculous system.

These glands control all of this through their excretion substances: hormones.

Hormones are chemical substances that travel through our blood to different organs from our endocrine glands. For example, thyroid hormones travel through the bloodstream to have an impact on our cardiovascular, metabolic, and developmental health. When the thyroid gland is out of balance, it can affect our temperature regulation, digestion, and energy levels.

So how can yoga help improve and heal this vital system in our body?

How Can Yoga Improve Hormone Health?

Yoga poses pressurize and depressurize specific endocrine glands. These subtle compressions and decompressions can regulate hormone secretions and bring them back into balance.

There are specific poses to emphasize in your yoga practice that will encourage greater hormone balance and stimulate the endocrine system. When this system is working optimally, there is consistent production of hormones and they are being distributed efficiently throughout the body.

Yoga also emphasizes deep breathing which can both improve circulation which supports the endocrine system and helps reduce stress — one of the main causes of hormone imbalance. In general, yoga can help in reducing stress levels and calm your mind.

5 Yoga Poses for Hormone Balance

  1. Cobra Pose

An incredibe stretch for the entire body and a gentle masssage for your adrenal gland. If you have PCOS this pose can ease common pains caused from this illness and stimulate the functions of ovaries.

2. Camel Pose

This pose stretches and stimulates your internal organs, especially the thyroid and parathyroid glands. A great pose to do if you suffer from hyper or hypo thyroidism or irregular periods.

3. Garland Pose

Performing this pose allows you to really open up the areas around the groin, inner thighs, and hips which stimulates circulation and aids in digestion.

4. Rabbit Pose

Another great stimulator for the major endocrine glands of the parathyroid and thyroid glands that are located in the neck. This pose also boosts metabolism.

5. Bridge Pose:

Stimulating for your immune and endocrine system, this pose is simple to perform so is best for beginners to yoga.It is also incredibly strengthening for your pelvic floor and back.

If you suffer from any sort of hormonal disorder I suggest performing these poses at least 3-4 times per week, holding each pose for 1 minute.
