I swear my whole spiritual practice changed when I started burning Palo Santo.

It was like it awakened this innate sense of complete calm instantly once lit. I had not felt such relief outside of meditation.

I started incorporating the burning of Palo Santo at the beginning of my meditations, and then at the beginning of my yoga practices, until eventually you would just find half burnt Palo Santo sticks all over my house in just random places.

On any surface I have a little ash tray and a Palo Santo stick. I feel susceptible to picking up energy throughout my day, especially when I am around a lot of other people and I felt like ending my day with the scent of Palo Santo really helped me let go of my day in drift into a peaceful rest.

It has become non-negotiable in my night-time routine. I just light the stick that is beside my bed a few times until I have inhaled enough to feel the euphoria.

I realize the way I am describing it makes it sound like some crazy drug but the feeling is truly unmatched. I would suggest it to anyone who has trouble shutting off their minds at night and calming their anxiety.

When I started incorporating aromatherapy into my spiritual practice I felt like I was enhancing the work I was doing. As you slip into a more relaxed state your body cannot only access the parts of you who need healing, but really get deep into those areas, resulting in a stronger release of negative frequencies and traumas.

Biologically, scents have always had a way to access our body and soul through the sense of smell. It is a truly magical experience and has the potential to benefit you in so many ways.

5 Benefits of Palo Santo:

  1. It aids in clearing negative energy

We have all felt it. Someone around you who endlessly complains or piles their problems onto you unwarranted. A lot of the time you are left feeling drained from that experience and need to clear yourself of the negative vibe. The high resin content in Palo Santo is believed to have purifying capabilities. So whether you are cleansing yourself, your space, people, or objects, rest assured the smoke is burning every negative atom in its path. You can also use it to cleanse your crystals on a regular basis to recharge them!

2. It stimulates relaxation

Like I said before, this is the ultimate smell to fall asleep to. So whether you buy the actual wooden stick (so cheap at any metaphysical store or Whole Foods), or an essential oil, or a candle, anyway you inhale the smell it will help to combat your insomnia, stress, and anxiety. The pleasing, grounding aroma of Palo Santo triggers the brain's olfactory system, stimulating the relaxation response and preparing the mind for meditation or creative focus.

3. It eases stress and the calms the nervous system

We all experience stress at different magnitudes. When we are stressed we heighten our sympathetic nervous system and exist in our “fight or flight: response. It is important for our physical and mental health to have a practice that counters this response and bring us back to homeostasis. The aroma of Palo Santo allows our bodies to fall into a state of relaxation which can help reduce stress and allow the chemical processes of our body that keep us alive to operate correctly.

4. Natural bug repellant

Now that we have entered mosquito season, (if you live in Florida too, wow it’s bad), it is important we try to navigate those bugs away from our homes. It is not good karma to kill bugs, even in our households, so by keeping them away naturally by burning a Palo Santo candle, and relaxing at the same time, sounds like a win- win!

5. Heals common ailments of the body

Although there has not been extensive research done on Palo Santo, it has proven a few great health benefits. Palo Santo has long been used as a remedy to fight headaches and forms of inflammation because of its antioxidant and limonene content. It can also help fight common colds, viruses, and seasonal allergies. It has also been shown to help with neck pain, back pain, sore muscles, and arthritis.
